Dog food does expire, and feeding food well past its useful life is a more common source of digestive upset than owners tend to assume, particularly in India's heat and humidity, which accelerate spoilage in both dry and wet food.

Dry food

An unopened bag of kibble, stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, is generally good for close to its printed best-before date, often 12 to 18 months from manufacture. Once opened, the fats in kibble begin to oxidise on exposure to air, and the food is best used within four to six weeks. Signs of spoiled kibble include a rancid or musty smell, visible mould, or kibble that looks unusually discoloured or oily on the surface. Buying smaller bags more frequently, rather than a large bag that sits open for months, keeps food fresher in practice.

Wet and fresh food

Unopened canned or pouched wet food has a longer shelf life than dry food when sealed, but once opened it should be refrigerated and used within two to three days at most, faster in warm weather. Fresh or homemade food spoils fastest of all and should be treated like any perishable human food, refrigerated promptly and discarded if left out for more than an hour or two in hot weather.

Storage tips for Indian conditions

Keep dry food in its original bag sealed inside an airtight container rather than transferring it loose, since the bag's inner lining is designed to block moisture and light in a way most storage containers are not. Store away from stoves, direct sun, and damp areas of the kitchen. If ants are a recurring problem, as they often are in Indian households, an airtight container solves both the freshness and the pest issue at once. During the monsoon months, ambient humidity alone can be enough to encourage mould growth in a bag left even briefly open, so it is worth checking food more frequently for that musty smell during the rainy season than the rest of the year. When in doubt about a food's condition, the smell test is a reasonably reliable first check, followed by a look for any change in colour or texture.

Best-before is not the same as unsafe

Most Indian pet food packaging carries a best-before date rather than a strict use-by date, and the distinction matters: a best-before date marks the point after which quality, flavour, and nutrient potency may start to decline, not necessarily the point at which the food becomes unsafe overnight. A bag a few days past its best-before date, still sealed and stored properly, is unlikely to pose a sudden risk, whereas an opened bag showing the smell, colour, or texture changes described earlier is a more reliable warning sign than the date alone. Treating the printed date as one useful data point alongside a physical check, rather than the sole deciding factor, gives a more accurate picture.
