Two Formats, One Goal

Walk down the pet food aisle of any Indian pet store today and you will find both dry kibble and wet, tinned or pouched food competing for space, a choice that did not exist for most Indian dog owners even a decade ago. Both formats can provide complete, balanced nutrition when made by a reputable manufacturer, but each comes with its own trade offs.

What Sets Them Apart

  • Moisture: dry food typically contains around 6 to 12 percent moisture, while wet food ranges from about 60 to 80 percent
  • Calorie density: dry food is more calorie dense, so smaller portions go further, which also makes it more economical per meal
  • Shelf life: dry food can sit in a bowl through the day without spoiling, which suits India's warmer climate and households where dogs graze; opened wet food needs refrigeration and should be used within two to three days
  • Aroma and palatability: wet food tends to be more aromatic and appealing to picky eaters or dogs with a reduced sense of smell

Dental Considerations

Dry kibble's crunch can offer some mechanical cleaning action on teeth, though it is not a substitute for proper dental care. Wet food, being soft, does not offer this benefit and can stick to teeth more easily. Regular brushing and vet approved dental chews remain important regardless of which food you choose.

Cost and Practicality in an Indian Household

Dry food is generally the more budget friendly and convenient option for most Indian homes, particularly useful for multi dog households, joint families, or anyone who travels and needs a caretaker to manage feeding easily. Wet food, while pricier, can be a good option for fussy eaters, senior dogs with dental trouble, or dogs who need extra encouragement to drink enough water.

Hydration Matters More in India's Climate

Given the heat across much of the country for a good part of the year, the higher water content of wet food can help dogs stay hydrated, particularly toy and small breeds that may not drink enough water on their own. That said, dogs fed dry food can stay just as hydrated with consistent access to fresh water.

Mixing Both

Many Indian pet owners choose to mix a small amount of wet food into dry kibble, which adds aroma and moisture while keeping costs and convenience manageable. This approach works well for dogs transitioning between life stages, or recovering their appetite after an illness.

Checking What You're Actually Buying

India does not yet have a dedicated regulatory body for pet food nutrition in the way the United States has AAFCO or Europe has FEDIAF. When comparing dry and wet options on Indian shelves, look for a nutritional adequacy statement referencing AAFCO or FEDIAF standards on the packaging, even for products made or packed locally, since this is currently the most reliable signal that a food has been formulated to complete, balanced standards rather than as a treat or supplementary food only.

Making the Right Choice for Your Dog

There is no single correct answer for every dog. Consider your dog's age, dental health, activity level, any medical conditions, and your own budget and lifestyle. A veterinarian can help match the right format, and the right specific product, to your dog's particular needs.
