Heat exhaustion sits in the dangerous middle ground between a dog simply being warm and a full heatstroke emergency. Recognising it at this stage is exactly what allows you to intervene before it becomes life-threatening.

The three stages, briefly

Heat-related illness in dogs generally progresses through three stages. Heat stress is mild, panting and seeking water, still easily reversed. Heat exhaustion follows, with body temperature typically in the range of 39.4 to 40.5°C (103 to 105°F), still responsive but clearly struggling. Left unaddressed, this progresses to heatstroke, generally once temperature exceeds roughly 40.5 to 41°C (105 to 106°F), a genuine medical emergency involving organ stress and a real risk of death.

Recognising heat exhaustion specifically

  • Heavy, continuous panting that does not settle in shade
  • Excessive drooling, and bright red gums
  • Noticeable fatigue, slowing down, or reluctance to continue walking
  • Occasional vomiting or loose stool
  • Your dog can still walk and respond to you, though clearly uncomfortable, this is what distinguishes it from the collapse and disorientation of heatstroke

What to do immediately

  • Stop all activity right away and move your dog to shade or an air-conditioned space
  • Offer small amounts of cool, not ice-cold, water
  • Use cool, wet towels on the belly, paws and groin, or a gentle hose down, avoiding ice or very cold water, which can cause blood vessels to constrict and actually trap heat inside
  • Use a fan to aid evaporative cooling once your dog is wet

Why this stage still needs a vet call

Even when a dog seems to recover quickly with cooling measures, heat exhaustion is worth a call to your vet, since dehydration and mild internal stress can linger even after visible symptoms settle. If your dog does not improve within 15 to 20 minutes of cooling efforts, or shows any sign of worsening, disorientation, weakness, vomiting that continues, treat it as a heatstroke emergency and get to a vet immediately rather than continuing to wait and observe.

Why catching it here matters

The gap between heat exhaustion and heatstroke can close in minutes, particularly in India's hot, humid conditions or with brachycephalic and senior dogs. Recognising the heat exhaustion stage, rather than waiting for the more obvious signs of heatstroke, is what gives you the window to actually prevent a genuine emergency rather than simply respond to one.

Why exertional heat exhaustion catches owners off guard

A notable share of heat exhaustion and heatstroke cases happen not from a dog left in a hot space, but from ordinary exercise, a game of fetch, a run, that continues a little too long on a warmer day than usual. Dogs rarely self-regulate as well as owners assume, an excited dog will often keep chasing a ball well past the point their body is coping safely, which is exactly why the responsibility for stopping the activity in time sits with the owner, not the dog's own judgement.
