Fish oil supplements made for human use are broadly safe to give a dog in an appropriately adjusted dose, since the active ingredient, omega-3 fatty acids, is the same compound regardless of which species the product was originally packaged for. Dosing and additives are where the real caution lies.

Why fish oil is used

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, support skin and coat health, can help reduce inflammation in conditions like arthritis, and are sometimes used to support heart and kidney health as part of a broader treatment plan. Many commercial dog foods already include some omega-3 content, so supplementation is often about topping up rather than filling a complete gap.

Dosing is the main concern

Human fish oil capsules are formulated for human body weights, so simply giving a dog one human-dose capsule can significantly overdose a small or medium dog relative to what is actually appropriate for its size. Overdosing on fish oil can cause digestive upset, and in the longer term, excessive omega-3 intake can affect blood clotting and, in some cases, contribute to weight gain given the calorie density of oil. A vet can advise on an appropriate dose based on the dog's weight and the concentration of EPA and DHA in the specific product, since this varies between brands.

What to check on the label

Plain fish oil, without added vitamin A or D in high concentrations, is the safer choice, since some human supplements combine fish oil with other vitamins at doses appropriate for humans but excessive for a dog's smaller body weight. Avoid flavoured or gummy fish oil supplements intended to be palatable for humans, which often contain xylitol or high sugar content. A fish oil product made specifically for dogs removes the guesswork around dosing and formulation, and is generally the simpler, safer choice over adapting a human product.

Krill oil as an alternative source

Krill oil, derived from small crustaceans rather than fish, is another source of omega-3 fatty acids sometimes used as an alternative to traditional fish oil, and some evidence suggests its EPA and DHA may be somewhat more readily absorbed in certain forms. The same dosing caution applies just as much here: krill oil supplements are formulated for human body weights, and giving a dog a full human dose risks the same overdose concerns as with standard fish oil. As with fish oil, a product made specifically for dogs, or a vet-guided dose of a human product, remains the more reliable approach than guessing.
