Heat rash, sometimes called prickly heat, shows up in dogs the same humid months it troubles people across most of India, roughly April through the monsoon. It is uncomfortable rather than dangerous in most cases, but it can spiral into a skin infection if ignored.
What causes it
Heat rash develops when sweat and oil block skin pores, usually in areas where skin folds trap moisture and heat: the armpits, groin, neck folds, and the base of the tail. Breeds with heavy coats, such as Golden Retrievers or Spitz mixes, and breeds with wrinkled skin, such as Shar Peis, Pugs and Bulldogs, are particularly prone in Indian humidity.
Symptoms
Small red bumps or pimple like spots, often in clusters
Itching and scratching at the affected area
Mild swelling or a slightly greasy feel to the skin
In more advanced cases, weeping sores or a musty odour, suggesting a secondary bacterial or yeast infection
Home care for mild cases
Keep the dog cool and dry, run a fan or air conditioning during the hottest hours, and bathe with a mild, vet recommended oatmeal or antibacterial shampoo to soothe irritated skin. Dry the coat thoroughly afterwards, particularly in skin folds, since damp folds are exactly where the rash restarts.
When it needs a vet
The rash spreads or worsens despite home care
There is discharge, a strong smell, or the skin becomes raw
The dog seems in pain rather than simply itchy
Symptoms recur repeatedly through the summer, which may point to an underlying allergy
Prevention through the humid months
Keep skin folds clean and dry, especially in wrinkled breeds
Groom heavy coated dogs regularly to improve airflow to the skin
Avoid walking during peak humidity and heat
Use a fan or cooling mat indoors during power cuts, common in many parts of the country in summer
Common Questions
Q: Is heat rash contagious to other pets in the house? A: No. It is caused by trapped moisture and heat in the dog's own skin, not by an infectious organism that spreads between animals.
Q: Can heat rash come back every summer? A: Yes, particularly in wrinkled or heavy coated breeds, unless skin fold hygiene and cooling habits become a consistent part of the summer routine rather than a one time fix.
