Walk into any Indian housing society's dog park and you will hear strong opinions on this. Some feed once a day, some three times, some free-feed by leaving a bowl out all day, and some swear by home-cooked rice and dal over packaged kibble. There is no single universal answer, but there is a sensible way to decide what works for your dog.

Why twice a day usually wins

For most healthy adult dogs, two meals a day, spaced roughly twelve hours apart, tends to work best. It keeps blood sugar and energy more stable than one large meal, reduces the risk of bloat in deep-chested breeds, and fits naturally around a morning and evening walk. Puppies need more frequent meals, typically three to four times a day up to about six months, tapering down as they grow.

Free feeding versus scheduled meals

Leaving food out all day sounds convenient, but it makes it much harder to notice early signs of illness, since a change in appetite is one of the clearest early symptoms of trouble. It also makes weight gain easier to miss in India's warmer months when dogs are naturally less active. A scheduled meal, eaten within twenty minutes, gives you daily information about your dog's health without extra effort.

Home-cooked food versus packaged food

Both can work well if done properly. Home-cooked meals popular in Indian households, rice, dal, boiled chicken or vegetables, need to be nutritionally balanced, not just safe. Left to guesswork, home diets often run short on calcium and specific vitamins over time. Good commercial dog food is formulated to be complete on its own. If you prefer home cooking, it is worth a proper conversation with your vet about balance rather than relying on tradition alone. Whichever path you choose, avoid mixing in the same gravy your family eats, since onion, garlic and heavy spice are hard on a dog's system.

The debate rarely has a single right answer, but consistency does more good than any specific schedule. Pick a routine that suits your dog's age, activity level and your own daily rhythm, and stick with it.

What to do if your dog begs for a second helping

A dog who acts as though they are always hungry, even right after a full meal, is not necessarily underfed. Many dogs are simply enthusiastic eaters, and begging behaviour is often reinforced unintentionally by owners who give in. If your dog is at a healthy weight and eating an appropriate portion for their size, resist the urge to top up the bowl based on begging alone. If the behaviour is new, or paired with actual weight loss, it is worth ruling out a medical cause with your vet rather than assuming it is simply appetite.
