What a Dog Trainer Does

Trainers typically focus on teaching specific skills, obedience commands, leash manners, tricks, and general good household habits. Many are excellent at building foundational skills and addressing everyday behaviour issues like jumping or pulling.

What a Behaviourist Does

Behaviourists, particularly veterinary behaviourists, focus on the underlying emotional and psychological causes of more complex problems, such as aggression, severe anxiety, compulsive behaviours, or phobias. A veterinary behaviourist is also a licensed vet, able to assess and prescribe medication where appropriate alongside behaviour modification.

Certification Varies Widely

Dog training is largely unregulated in India and in much of the world, so qualifications vary enormously between individuals using the same job title. Look for recognised certifications and a clear, force free training philosophy when choosing a trainer.

When to Choose Which

  • A trainer is usually the right fit for teaching basic obedience, leash skills, or general puppy manners
  • A behaviourist is the better choice for aggression, severe fear, compulsive behaviours, or any problem that is worsening despite consistent training efforts
  • Some complex cases benefit from both working together, a trainer handling skill building alongside a behaviourist addressing the underlying emotional cause

Getting Access to Specialist Support in India

Veterinary behaviourists remain relatively rare across Indian cities, so many pet owners work with a regular vet alongside an experienced, certified trainer, or access remote consultations with a veterinary behaviourist where in person options are limited.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Book

  • What certification or training do you hold, and from which organisation
  • Do you use force free, reward based methods as standard
  • Have you worked with a case similar to mine before, particularly if aggression or severe fear is involved
  • Can you work alongside my regular vet if medication or a medical check is needed

Group Classes Versus One on One Sessions

Group classes offer valuable socialisation alongside skill building and tend to be more affordable, while private sessions allow a trainer to focus entirely on your dog's specific challenges. A dog who is reactive or easily overwhelmed around other dogs usually benefits more from starting privately before joining a group setting.
