A handful of reliable commands make daily life with a dog dramatically easier, from crossing a busy Indian street safely to having guests over without chaos. Here is how to teach the essentials.

Sit

Hold a treat close to your dog's nose, then move it up and back over their head. As their head tilts up, their bottom naturally lowers. The moment they sit, say the word and reward. Repeat ten times a session.

Stay

Ask for a sit, open your palm and say stay, then reward after just one second, even if you have not moved. Gradually add distance and duration. Rushing this step is the most common reason stay falls apart.

Come (Recall)

Practise in a safe, enclosed space first, never on a busy road. Say your dog's name and come in an upbeat tone, then reward generously the instant they arrive. Never call your dog to punish them, or they will learn to avoid coming at all.

Down

From a sit, lower a treat straight to the floor between your dog's paws. Most dogs will follow it down into a lying position. Mark the moment their elbows touch the ground.

Leave It

Useful for the food scraps and stray litter common on Indian streets. Show a treat in a closed fist. Wait for your dog to stop pawing and sniffing and look away, then reward from your other hand, never the closed fist.

Heel or Loose Leash Walking

Reward your dog for walking with slack in the leash beside you, and stop moving the instant they pull ahead.

Tips for Faster Progress

  • Train one command at a time until it is solid before adding the next
  • Practise in different rooms and eventually outdoors, since dogs do not automatically generalise a skill to a new place
  • End each session on a success, even if that means asking for something easy

Troubleshooting Common Problems

If your dog only sits when they can see a treat in your hand, you have taught them to follow the treat rather than the word. Fix this by using an empty hand for the same hand signal a few times before rewarding from a pocket or treat pouch instead.

If recall is unreliable outdoors, you have likely moved too fast from a quiet room to an exciting street or park. Add a long training line in open areas so your dog cannot rehearse ignoring you, and keep rewarding every single successful recall generously, even once the command feels well established.

Teaching Wait at Doors and Gates

A solid wait at the front door or gate is one of the most practical safety commands for Indian homes, where a door left ajar for a delivery or a gate opened for a car can mean a dog slips out unsupervised. Practise by opening the door a crack and rewarding your dog for staying back until released.
