Potty pads offer a practical solution for young puppies not yet fully vaccinated, for high rise apartment living common across Indian cities, or for households where frequent outdoor trips are not always possible.

Choosing a Location

Pick a consistent, easily accessible spot away from food and resting areas, ideally somewhere with an easy to clean floor surface, such as a balcony or a bathroom.

Getting Started

Place your puppy on the pad after waking, after eating, and after play, the times they are most likely to need to go. Use a consistent cue word as they begin, and reward calmly and immediately once they finish.

Watch for the Signs

Sniffing the ground, circling, or heading toward a corner are all signs a puppy needs to go. Learning to catch these moments and redirect promptly to the pad speeds up training considerably.

Handle Accidents Without Punishment

Clean accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to fully remove the scent, which otherwise draws a puppy back to the same spot. Never punish an accident after the fact, since a puppy cannot connect a delayed consequence to the act itself, and punishment often just teaches them to hide when they go.

Transitioning to Outdoor Toileting Later

If your long term goal is fully outdoor toileting, gradually move the pad closer to the door over several weeks, then eventually outside itself, maintaining the same cue word throughout so the association carries over.

A Note for Indian Apartment Living

Many puppies in high rise buildings rely on potty pads for longer than dogs in ground floor homes, simply due to the practical challenge of frequent lift trips. This is entirely manageable with a consistent routine and does not need to disadvantage a puppy's overall training progress.

Preventing Confusion With Rugs and Carpets

A pad's soft, absorbent texture can resemble bathmats, rugs, or carpeting to a puppy still learning the difference. Keep these materials out of reach during the early training period, or place a chair or small barrier over favourite household rugs until your puppy reliably targets the pad, reducing the chance of an easily preventable mix up.

Switching Pad Brands Without Setbacks

If you need to switch potty pad brands, place a used pad from the old brand alongside the new one for the first few days, since the familiar scent helps bridge the transition and reduces the chance of confused or missed attempts during the changeover.
