"Off" and "down" are often used interchangeably by mistake, which confuses dogs no end. "Down" means lie down on the floor. "Off" means get off whatever you are currently touching, whether that is a person, the sofa, the dining table or the kitchen counter. Keeping the two separate makes both commands work better.

Why dogs jump and counter surf

Jumping up is usually a greeting behaviour that gets reinforced without anyone meaning to, since a jumping dog often receives attention, even if that attention is a scolding. Counter surfing happens because Indian kitchens are full of interesting smells at dog height for a counter, from a fish curry cooling down to rotis stacked for dinner. Both behaviours are solved the same way: remove the reward for the unwanted action and heavily reward the alternative.

Teaching off for jumping

When your dog jumps on you, turn away and fold your arms, offering no eye contact, no touch, and no words. The instant all four paws are back on the ground, turn back, say "off" as a label for what just happened, and reward calmly. Over time your dog learns that jumping makes you disappear and four paws on the floor makes you interesting again. Ask family members and household help to use the same response consistently, since one person rewarding jumping with attention will slow the whole process down.

Teaching off for furniture and counters

For a dog on the sofa or dining chair, say "off" once, then lure them down with a treat held near the floor rather than pulling on their collar. Reward the moment all four paws land. For counter surfing, manage the environment first by not leaving food within reach, then practise by placing a low value item on the counter edge under supervision, saying "off" the instant your dog approaches, and rewarding disengagement generously.

In an Indian household

  • Guests, the milkman, the newspaper delivery and courier staff are frequent visitors, so a reliable "off" saves a lot of apologising at the door.
  • During festivals with many visitors in and out, keep a treat pouch near the entrance so anyone can reward calm greetings on the spot.
  • If jumping is aimed at children or elderly family members, prioritise management, such as a leash held near the door, while the cue is still being built.
