The African mourning dove, also known as the mourning collared dove, is a sub-Saharan African species distinct from the North American mourning dove despite the shared name. It is less commonly kept than the ring-necked or diamond dove but shares the same fundamentally gentle, low-maintenance nature that makes doves appealing to owners who want a calm bird without a parrot's intensity.

Characteristics and behaviour

A medium-sized, stocky dove with quick, characteristic wingbeats in flight, the African mourning dove is naturally gregarious, often feeding and roosting in loose groups rather than staying strictly paired off. Its call, a deep, nasal, hooting series, gives the species its common name, and is generally considered a pleasant, unobtrusive background sound rather than a disturbance.

Diet

A good dove or pigeon seed mix, supplemented with fresh greens and grit for digestion, suits this species well, following the same general dietary principles as other doves covered in this series.

Habitat and maintenance

A spacious aviary or large flight cage allowing horizontal movement suits this ground-foraging species, which spends much of its time feeding at floor level in the wild. A stable, calm environment with minimal sudden disturbance supports this naturally unshowy bird's wellbeing.

Lifespan

Following the general pattern for medium-sized doves, the African mourning dove can be expected to live in a broadly similar range to other pet doves, roughly 12 to 15 years with attentive care, though breed-specific longevity data is less thoroughly documented for this less commonly kept species than for the ring-necked or diamond dove.

A note on availability in India

Like the European Starling covered elsewhere in this series, the African mourning dove does not have a well-established presence in the Indian pet trade the way the ring-necked or diamond dove does. Anyone specifically drawn to this species should expect a more limited search for a genuine, responsibly bred bird, and might reasonably consider the widely available ring-necked or diamond dove instead, both of which offer a very similar calm, low-maintenance ownership experience.
