One of the most recognisable parrots in the world, combining brilliant colour with a genuinely serious, decades-long commitment.
The blue and gold macaw, also called the blue and yellow macaw, is among the most iconic parrots kept in captivity, its vivid blue back and wings contrasting sharply against a golden-yellow chest. It represents the large macaw experience covered generally elsewhere in this series in its most classic, widely recognised form.
Blue and gold macaws are intelligent, affectionate and playful, forming strong bonds with their owners and capable of an impressive vocabulary when consistently trained. They are also genuinely loud, with a natural screech that carries considerable distances, and physically powerful, with a beak capable of cracking the hardest nuts as well as causing serious injury if mishandled or provoked.
A diet built on quality large-parrot pellets, fresh fruit and vegetables, and nuts in moderation suits this species well. Their strong beak means whole nuts in shell double as valuable enrichment alongside nutrition.
This species needs a genuinely large cage, ideally alongside a substantial play stand, and significant daily flight or exercise time. Given their size, strength and noise, a blue and gold macaw is a poor fit for apartment living or any home without real dedicated space and tolerant neighbours.
Blue and gold macaws commonly live 30 years in the wild and 50 to 60 years in captivity with excellent lifelong care, a commitment spanning most of an owner's adult life.
