Gentle, quiet and far less demanding than most parrots, doves are one of the most underrated pet bird choices for a calm home.

Doves rarely get the attention that parrots do in conversations about pet birds, but for the right household, they are one of the most rewarding low-drama choices available. Gentle by nature and content with a peaceful routine, doves suit owners who want a calm, attractive bird without the noise or intensity of a parrot.

Characteristics and behaviour

Commonly kept dove species include the ring-necked dove and the diamond dove, both known for a soft, soothing coo rather than the sharp calls typical of parrots. Doves are naturally placid and rarely aggressive, and while they can become comfortable around their owner, most doves do not particularly enjoy being picked up or handled, preferring to be observed and appreciated from a slight distance.

Diet

A good dove seed mix, supplemented with fresh greens, vegetables and occasional fruit, along with grit to aid digestion, since doves swallow seeds whole rather than shelling them the way parrots do, covers this species' nutritional needs well.

Habitat and maintenance

Doves do best in a wide cage or aviary that allows horizontal flight, similar to finches, with a stable, calm environment. They are not escape artists in the way some smaller birds are, but still benefit from a secure, draft-free space with a consistent day and night cycle.

Lifespan

Doves commonly live 12 to 15 years as pets, a solid, moderate commitment that sits comfortably between the shorter lifespans of finches and the multi-decade commitment of larger parrots.

A gentle companion for a quiet household

For families or individuals put off by the noise and intensity of parrot ownership but still drawn to keeping birds, a dove offers a genuinely different, calmer experience, one built around quiet company and gentle presence rather than active training or interaction.

Common health issues

  • Canker (trichomoniasis), a protozoal infection also seen in pigeons, which can cause reduced appetite, weight loss and a yellowish discharge in the mouth
  • Respiratory infections, particularly in a draughty or poorly ventilated space
  • Overgrown nails and beak in birds without adequate natural wear from perches and foraging
  • Obesity in doves fed an overly rich, low-activity diet, since this species does not have the same active climbing and foraging drive as parrots
