The smallest of the white cockatoos is also one of the most famously intelligent, capable of solving multi-step puzzles that have drawn genuine scientific research.
The Goffin's cockatoo, also called the Tanimbar corella after its native Indonesian island group, is the smallest of the white cockatoo species, but makes up for its modest size with an outsized personality and remarkable problem-solving intelligence that has made it a subject of academic study, including Oxford University research on its ability to solve sequential lock puzzles.
Goffin's cockatoos are playful, mischievous and almost constantly active, frequently described as having the energy and curiosity of a busy toddler. Their intelligence, while impressive, also means they get into trouble easily if left unsupervised, and they are notorious for being able to work out how to open their own cage doors. Like other cockatoos, they can develop separation anxiety and screaming if not given clear boundaries around attention from an early stage, since showering a new cockatoo with constant, uninterrupted attention often backfires later.
A diet built on quality pellets, supplemented with fresh vegetables and fruit, suits Goffin's cockatoos well, with sunflower seeds limited given how easily this species can become overweight on a rich diet.
Goffin's cockatoos need significant daily time out of the cage, ideally supervised free flight in a bird-proofed space, and a large, secure cage for the times they are confined. Puzzle-style toys are particularly well suited to this species given its problem-solving drive, and a steady supply of destructible toys and safe chewing material helps channel its constant need to explore.
Goffin's cockatoos commonly live 30 to 40 years, with individuals occasionally surpassing 40, a genuine multi-decade commitment despite this being one of the smaller cockatoo species.
Respiratory infections are a genuine concern for this species, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces or where the bird is exposed to smoke, aerosol sprays, scented candles, air fresheners or fumes from overheated non-stick cookware. That last point deserves special attention: cookware coated with PTFE, commonly sold as Teflon and widely used in Indian kitchens, releases fumes when overheated that are essentially instantly fatal to birds, even in small amounts and even in a room some distance from the kitchen. Keeping a Goffin's cockatoo, or any pet bird, well away from the kitchen during cooking, and avoiding non-stick cookware in the household altogether if practical, is a genuinely serious safety measure rather than an overcautious one.
