Beyond the birds gathering on your balcony, purpose-bred fancy pigeons make surprisingly gentle, loyal companion birds.

It is easy to think of pigeons purely as the feral birds common on Indian streets and balconies, but purpose-bred fancy and domestic pigeons, kept deliberately by fanciers for centuries, are a genuinely different proposition: calm, quiet by parrot standards, and capable of forming a real bond with their keeper.

Characteristics and behaviour

Unlike parrots, pet pigeons do not scream or squawk, and well-socialised birds are famously docile, often tolerating being petted and even trained to come when called or perch on a keeper's shoulder. Fancy breeds vary enormously in appearance, from the dramatic fanned tail of the Fantail to the feathered hood of the Jacobin, each the product of generations of selective breeding for a particular trait rather than any behavioural difference.

Diet

A good pigeon or dove seed mix, supplemented with grit for digestion since pigeons swallow food whole, fresh greens and occasional calcium supplementation, particularly for hens during egg-laying, covers most of a pet pigeon's dietary needs.

Habitat and maintenance

Traditional loft housing, an enclosed but well-ventilated space with flat perches and nest boxes, suits pigeons best, allowing them the flight space they need. Indoor pet pigeons can also do well in a spacious cage with daily supervised time to fly, provided the space is genuinely adequate rather than a token gesture.

Lifespan

Well-cared-for domestic and fancy pigeons commonly live 10 to 15 years, with some individuals reaching into their twenties, a considerably longer lifespan than the feral pigeons seen in cities, whose lives are cut short by predation, traffic and disease rather than any inherent biological limit.

A quick legal clarification

Given how much of this series deals with the Wildlife Protection Act and native species restrictions, it is worth being clear that fancy and domestic pigeons are a different situation entirely. These are domesticated birds, descended over centuries from wild rock pigeons but bred and kept openly for generations, and keeping or breeding them does not carry the same legal complications discussed for native parakeets, mynas or owls elsewhere in this series.
