Some birds bite when startled, others simply do not have it in their nature. Here are the species most likely to stay easy-going.

Temperament varies enormously across pet bird species, and while any individual bird's personality is shaped by how it is raised and handled, some species are simply predisposed to a gentler, more forgiving nature than others. If a calm, low-drama bird is what you are after, these are the ones worth starting your search with.

Species known for gentle temperaments

  • Cockatiels: affectionate, easy-going and rarely aggressive, with most bites being an accidental nip from fear rather than genuine hostility
  • Budgerigars: small and gentle, forgiving of a beginner's early handling mistakes
  • Bourke's parakeet: one of the quietest and most placid of the small parrot species, rarely nippy even when startled
  • Cockatoos: deeply affectionate and eager to cuddle, though their gentleness comes with an intense need for attention that can tip into problem behaviour if unmet
  • Pionus parrots: calm and steady by parrot standards, often described as the introvert of the parrot world
  • Doves: naturally placid and rarely aggressive, though not birds that particularly enjoy being handled

Gentle is not the same as low-need

It is worth separating temperament from care requirements. A cockatoo is genuinely one of the gentlest, most affectionate birds you can own, and also one of the most demanding, since its need for near-constant companionship can turn into screaming or feather plucking if left alone too often. A gentle nature makes a bird pleasant and safer to handle, but it does not reduce the amount of time, enrichment or social contact that species needs to stay emotionally healthy.

How early handling shapes gentleness

Even within a naturally gentle species, how a bird is raised matters enormously. A chick that is handled calmly and often during its early weeks, without being grabbed or startled, generally grows into a far more trusting adult than one that had inconsistent or fearful early experiences. If you are choosing a young bird, ask the breeder or seller how much hands-on socialisation it has already had, since this single factor often predicts adult temperament better than species alone.
