One of the most affectionate parrots in the world also asks for one of the most complete emotional commitments any pet bird can demand.

The umbrella cockatoo, also called the white cockatoo, is instantly recognisable by its pure white plumage and the dramatic white crest that fans open like an umbrella when the bird is excited, startled or simply showing off. It has a well-earned reputation as one of the most affectionate parrot species in the world, and an equally well-earned reputation for being genuinely difficult to meet the needs of.

Conservation status

The umbrella cockatoo is classified as Endangered in the wild, with populations under severe pressure from historical trapping for the pet trade alongside ongoing habitat loss on its native Indonesian islands. This makes sourcing a documented, captive-bred bird a genuine conservation consideration, not just a legal formality.

Characteristics and behaviour

Umbrella cockatoos are famously clingy, often described as needing near-constant physical closeness with their owner, and are prone to serious separation anxiety, feather plucking and self-mutilation if that need goes unmet consistently. This is not a species suited to a household that cannot offer daily, substantial one-on-one time indefinitely, essentially for the rest of the bird's very long life.

Diet

A diet built on quality large-parrot pellets, fresh fruit and vegetables, and nuts in moderation suits this species well, with close attention to preventing obesity given how sedentary a stressed or under-exercised cockatoo can become.

Habitat and maintenance

A large, secure cage with a genuinely significant amount of daily out-of-cage interaction, structured boundaries introduced from the very beginning, and consistent enrichment are essential. Owners who shower a new umbrella cockatoo with unlimited, unstructured attention often find the bird develops screaming or clinginess that becomes very difficult to walk back later.

Lifespan

Umbrella cockatoos can live 40 to 70 years or more with excellent care, meaning this bird will very likely need a succession plan beyond its original owner's lifetime, a genuinely serious consideration before bringing one home.
