Eggs are cheap, easy to find in any Indian kitchen, and genuinely nutritious for pet birds when they are offered the right way. They are not, however, something to feed every day without a second thought.
A cooked egg delivers high-quality protein and an amino acid profile that closely matches what a bird's body needs for feather growth, muscle repair and, in breeding females, egg production. The yolk also contains vitamin B12 and healthy fats, while the crushed, cooked shell is a useful source of calcium.
Once or twice a week, in a small portion, is enough for most pet birds. Egg is not meant to be a daily staple. Overfeeding protein can contribute to obesity and put extra strain on the kidneys over time, and birds can develop a preference for egg that crowds out other, more balanced foods.
Cooked egg spoils quickly, and it spoils faster still in Indian heat and monsoon humidity than it would in a cooler climate. Offer it fresh, and remove anything uneaten within an hour or two rather than leaving it in the cage through a warm afternoon.
If your bird has a history of egg binding or other reproductive complications, check with your avian vet before adding egg to the diet regularly, since it may not be the right choice for every bird.
Small amounts of cooked, unsalted lentils such as moong or chana dal offer a plant-based protein option that many birds enjoy just as much, without any of the spoilage concerns that come with egg in a hot climate. For smaller insect-eating species such as some finches, live or dried mealworms are another well-regarded protein source, though they are not needed for most seed and pellet-eating parrots and budgies.
