Quick facts

  • Origin: San Gabriel, California, developed in 1924 by Otto Brock from Chinchilla rabbit lines
  • Adult weight: 3.2 to 4.5 kilograms (about 7 to 10 pounds)
  • Lifespan: 5 to 10 years
  • Coat: Short, dense, and fine, with sepia brown shading that darkens toward the face, ears, feet, back, and tail
  • Best suited for: Owners drawn to a genuinely uncommon breed with a calm, undemanding temperament

What they are like

American Sables are generally docile, spending much of the day resting but enjoying company on their own terms.

They tend to bond well with their owners while remaining fairly independent, a balance many owners find appealing.

Being a fairly placid breed, they usually settle into a household routine without much fuss once comfortable.

Feeding and diet

  • Fresh hay should always be available and forms the bulk of the diet
  • About three tablespoons of pellets daily suits most adults, adjusted for body condition
  • Fresh greens in daily rotation round out a balanced diet
  • Because this is a commercially built breed prone to steady weight gain, portions are worth measuring rather than free-feeding

Grooming and everyday care

  • A weekly brush is generally sufficient for this short, low-maintenance coat
  • Brush a little more during seasonal moults
  • Standard nail and ear checks apply on a monthly basis

Health watch

  • A generally hardy breed without notable hereditary conditions beyond the dental and digestive concerns common to all rabbits
  • Weight management is worth keeping an eye on given the breed's solid, commercial-type build
  • Routine vet checks for teeth and general condition are advisable as with any breed

Keeping one in India

The American Sable's short coat and moderate size make it manageable in Indian conditions, with the usual summer precautions around shade and hydration.

This is a genuinely rare breed even internationally, so anyone in India wanting one should expect a longer search through specialist or import-focused breeders.
