Quick facts

  • Origin: Southern California in the 1920s, developed by George West through crosses of the Himalayan, Standard Chinchilla, and New Zealand White
  • Adult weight: 3.6 to 4.8 kilograms (about 8 to 10.5 pounds)
  • Lifespan: 5 to 10 years
  • Coat: Short, dense, white with black or dark points on the nose, ears, feet, and tail
  • Best suited for: Families and first-time owners who want a calm, medium-large rabbit that handles well once socialised

What they are like

Californians are generally described as calm and docile, more even-tempered than many high-energy small breeds.

They benefit from plenty of time outside their enclosure to interact with their family and build trust.

Their steady nature makes them relatively easy to handle for a rabbit of this size, though as with any larger breed, proper support is essential.

Feeding and diet

  • Fresh hay should always be available and forms the bulk of a healthy diet
  • Three tablespoons of pellets daily is a reasonable starting point for an adult, adjusted for body condition
  • Fresh greens in daily rotation support digestion
  • Because Californians were bred for efficient growth, they can gain weight quickly if pellets are not measured carefully

Grooming and everyday care

  • A weekly brush is generally enough for this short, low-maintenance coat
  • Brush a little more often during seasonal moults
  • Standard nail and ear checks apply on a monthly basis

Health watch

  • Generally a hardy breed without major breed-specific health concerns beyond the usual dental and digestive issues
  • Weight management matters given the breed's tendency toward efficient growth, so measured feeding is worthwhile
  • Routine vet checks for teeth and general condition are advisable as with any rabbit

Keeping one in India

The Californian's short coat is an advantage in Indian heat, though shade, hydration, and a cool resting surface remain essential through summer.

This breed is fairly practical for Indian households given its manageable size and calm temperament, though it remains uncommon outside dedicated breeders.
