Quick facts

  • Origin: Germany, originally known as the Klein Widder, later refined in the United States
  • Adult weight: 1.4 to 2.9 kilograms (about 3 to 6.5 pounds), does typically running smaller than bucks
  • Lifespan: 7 to 10 years
  • Coat: Short, dense, and glossy
  • Best suited for: Families, first-time rabbit keepers, and anyone wanting a substantial lop that still fits comfortably indoors

What they are like

Mini Lops are known for being easygoing and people-oriented, often described as one of the more laid-back lop breeds.

They enjoy company, whether human or another rabbit, and can become withdrawn if left alone for long stretches each day.

Their sturdier build makes them a bit more tolerant of gentle handling by children than the smaller dwarf breeds, though supervision is still essential.

Feeding and diet

  • Grass hay should be available at all times and forms the majority of the diet by volume
  • About two to three tablespoons of pellets daily suits an average adult, adjusted for activity level and body condition
  • Fresh vegetables such as coriander, mint, and small amounts of carrot can be rotated through the week for variety
  • Because Mini Lops are prone to overeating, treats like fruit should be occasional, a teaspoon-sized piece once or twice a week at most

Grooming and everyday care

  • A weekly brush is generally sufficient, increasing to a few times a week during seasonal shedding
  • Check the lopped ears regularly for wax build-up or odour
  • Trim nails monthly, since this breed's larger paws can make overgrown nails more likely to catch on bedding

Health watch

  • Weight gain is the most common issue in this breed, so measuring pellets rather than free-feeding is important
  • Like other lops, ear infections need to be watched for, particularly during the monsoon months when humidity is high
  • Overgrown molars can develop silently, so an annual dental check with an exotic-animal vet is worthwhile

Keeping one in India

Mini Lops handle Indian conditions reasonably well provided they have shade, a cool resting surface, and access to fresh water at all times during summer.

They are one of the more frequently bred lop varieties in India, which generally means better access to vets and breeders familiar with the breed's needs.
