Quick facts

  • Origin: United States, bred down in size from the Standard Rex by breeder Monna Berry
  • Adult weight: 1.4 to 2 kilograms (about 3 to 4.5 pounds)
  • Lifespan: 5 to 8 years, occasionally reaching 10
  • Coat: Short, dense, upright plush fur, unusually soft to the touch
  • Best suited for: First-time owners looking for a calm, manageable-sized rabbit with an easy-care coat

What they are like

Mini Rex rabbits are generally described as docile and intelligent, calmer than many dwarf breeds while still being playful.

They tend to be independent, content to explore on their own terms rather than seeking constant attention, though they do enjoy company once bonded.

Their manageable size and steady temperament make them a popular choice for owners new to rabbits.

Feeding and diet

  • Fresh hay should always be available and forms the core of a healthy diet
  • About two tablespoons of pellets daily suits most adults, adjusted to keep a lean body condition
  • Fresh vegetables in small daily portions round out the diet
  • Because the velvet coat has no long guard hairs to protect the skin, keep an eye on skin condition if the diet or environment changes

Grooming and everyday care

  • The plush coat is famously low maintenance and rarely mats, a light weekly wipe with a soft brush or damp hands is usually enough
  • The thinner fur offers less insulation and less cushioning than other coats, so provide soft bedding to prevent sore hocks
  • Nail trims every four to six weeks are standard

Health watch

  • Sore hocks, a pressure sore on the back feet, are more common in this breed because the coat offers less cushioning, so avoid wire flooring and provide soft resting mats
  • Otherwise a fairly hardy breed, with routine hay, hydration, and exercise being the main preventive measures
  • Regular weight checks help catch early gut or dental problems before they become serious

Keeping one in India

The short, sleek coat is genuinely an advantage in Indian summers compared to woollier breeds, though the rabbit still needs shade and cool flooring to avoid heat stress.

Mini Rex rabbits are becoming more available through breeders in India, and their manageable size makes them a practical choice for apartment living.
