A well-built home does not need to be expensive. Many Indian rabbit owners put together comfortable enclosures using material already lying around the house, or bought cheaply from a local hardware shop. The goal is space, safety and easy cleaning.
A large wooden crate or an old almirah with the doors removed, lined with a washable mat, makes a solid base enclosure. Add a wire mesh exercise pen around it, sold cheaply at most pet shops, to expand the living space without much cost. For a low-budget outdoor run, PVC pipes and garden netting can be assembled into a lightweight, movable enclosure that keeps the rabbit safe from crows and stray cats while allowing grazing time on grass.
Storage crates with the lid removed and holes drilled for ventilation also work well as a starter hutch, provided the plastic is thick enough that the rabbit cannot chew through it.
Whatever design you choose, check it weekly for chewed corners, loose wire or sharp edges, and repair promptly. Rabbits will find any weakness in an enclosure eventually.
Avoid the kitchen, where fumes and sudden heat from cooking are unpleasant for a rabbit's sensitive respiratory system, and avoid spots near a main door where draughts and startling noise are constant. A quiet corner of a living room or bedroom, off the floor's direct sun path and away from balconies exposed to monsoon rain, tends to work best. If the enclosure has to sit outdoors, choose a spot that gets morning shade rather than harsh afternoon sun.
Crows, stray dogs and cats are a genuine risk to outdoor rabbits in most Indian neighbourhoods, and even a securely latched hutch can be pried open by a determined animal. Use sturdy wire mesh rather than chicken wire, fit latches that a paw cannot flip open, and raise the hutch off the ground on legs or a stand to discourage digging predators from getting underneath.
