A quick comparison to help you pick the right species before you bring one home.

Not every hamster is the same animal in a different colour. The species you choose affects how it should be housed, how it behaves with people, and even whether it can live with a companion. Here is a snapshot of the hamsters commonly available through breeders and pet shops in India.

Syrian Hamster

The largest and most commonly kept hamster in India, often called the golden hamster. Calm, easy to tame, and famously solitary, a Syrian must live alone as an adult or it will fight, sometimes fatally, with any other hamster. Their larger size also makes them easier for children to handle safely under supervision.

Dwarf Hamsters (Campbell's, Winter White, Roborovski)

Smaller, faster, and generally less inclined to sit still for cuddles. Campbell's and Winter Whites can sometimes live in same-sex pairs from a young age, though this needs careful monitoring. Roborovskis are the quickest and skittish, better suited to being watched than handled.

Chinese Hamster

A less common option in India, distinguished by a longer, mouse-like tail. Generally calm once settled, and kept solitary as an adult like the Syrian. Worth considering if you can find a reputable specialised breeder and want something a little different from the usual Syrian or dwarf choices.

Which one to pick

  • Want a calmer hamster that tolerates handling well: choose a Syrian.
  • Want a smaller, more active hamster to watch rather than hold: consider a dwarf breed.
  • Have young children who want to hold the hamster often: a Syrian's larger size and steadier temperament is usually more forgiving.
  • Want something fast and entertaining to observe in a larger tank setup: Roborovskis are a good match.
  • Want a first pet with a slightly longer track record of good temperament in Indian pet shops and breeders: the Syrian remains the safest, most widely available starting point.

Where to source one

Buy from a reputable breeder or an established pet store rather than an unregulated seller, and ask to see the animal active and alert before taking it home. A healthy hamster should have bright eyes, a clean coat, and no discharge around the nose or eyes. It is also worth asking the seller about the hamster's age and, where possible, its parentage, since younger, well-socialised hamsters generally tame faster than older ones bought from crowded, high-turnover stock.
