Building a balanced diet using foods available across India.

A hamster's diet in the wild is remarkably varied, seeds, grains, the occasional insect, and vegetation. In captivity, a good commercial mix does most of the work, but understanding what it should contain, and how to round it out, helps you keep your hamster healthy for its full lifespan.

The foundation: commercial hamster mix

Choose a mix formulated specifically for hamsters, ideally one with a reasonable protein percentage and a mix of seeds, grains, and pellets, rather than a mix that is mostly sunflower seeds, which hamsters will pick out and leave the rest, leading to an unbalanced diet.

Fresh additions

  • Vegetables like carrot, cucumber, broccoli, and spinach, offered in small amounts a few times a week.
  • A tiny amount of fruit as an occasional treat, never as a daily food.
  • Occasional protein sources such as a small piece of boiled egg or plain cooked chicken, useful especially for a nursing mother.
  • Unsalted, unroasted pumpkin or sunflower seeds as an occasional extra, rather than a daily staple.

What to avoid entirely

  • Onion, garlic, and raw potato.
  • Chocolate, caffeine, and anything sugary or salty from your own kitchen.
  • Almonds and other foods with trace toxins in raw form, given the small body size of a hamster.
  • Any spiced or oily food, since Indian home cooking is rarely mild enough for a hamster's system.
  • Leftover dal, curry, or rice made for the household, even plain versions usually carry more salt and oil than a hamster's system can handle.

Portion sizes

A tablespoon of commercial mix a day for a Syrian hamster, slightly less for a dwarf, is a reasonable starting point, adjusted based on how much is left uneaten. Hamsters also hoard food in their cheek pouches and hideouts, so do not assume an empty bowl means an empty stomach, check the hideout periodically and clear out old stored food.

Reading your hamster's weight over time

Since portion needs vary slightly between individuals, the best guide is your hamster's own body condition rather than a fixed number. A hamster that feels noticeably rounder at the middle, or one that feels ribby and light, is a cue to adjust the daily amount rather than sticking rigidly to a set measure.
